Dealing with Hostile Hotel Guest?
I live and work at a small hotel as Guest Relations Manager. I was off my shift last night, getting ready for bed, and had a drink to relax when my husband calls me on his shift about an angry customer who thought she was getting a room with two bedrooms and two beds. We have no such room like this. When my husband first called, I had no idea what the problem was and he would not tell me. I could hear her yelling outside my door. My husband told this woman where my room was and she was demanding I come talk to her even though I was not dressed to do so. She refused to speak to me on the phone. I was upset that my husband told this woman my room number, did NOT just tell her the hotel and guest relations manager is not available, and he did not even try to resolve the customer's issues himself. He sided with the customer and told me to do my job and come out of the room even after I explained to him I did not even have a bra on and had already had a drink on a Friday night after my shift. I ended up having to come out of my room with no bra on and was upset myself. I was being screamed at and I explained that #1 I was not the hotel manager and that I was off my shift. #2 I had not taken her reservation and can't solve the problem from the balcony while being yelled at, and #3 we do not have any rooms with 2 bedrooms in them and we would never tell anyone such a thing. Had I been prepared; I could have looked up her information in the office computer and tried to fix the issue. Although, since she expected and paid for a room type we do not have or advertise on Expedia (or other online hotel deal sight), no amount of fixing could be done. I walked away from the situation and told my husband to do his job as Front Desk and fix the situation himself since I was not prepared OR properly dressed to do so. I also needed to cool off lol My husband gave this woman an Ocean Front room which is worth WAY more than she paid for and I now have to face her for the next two days of her stay. My hotel manager said she just gives people like that their money back and send the hostile ones on their way. What would you have done? This is the first time an issue like this has happened off my shift. I've always defused customers with a smile and professionalism when on my shift OR prepared. I would like to add that this woman assumed I was the hotel manager and was cursing and screaming in my face. Added to that, my husband does not do his job and passes the buck to me..even on my days off. He can do normal, happy check-ins or reservations...anything else is on me. He won't even call the manager...he calls ME. I don't want this issue to come up again and feel bad for allowing my anger at the whole situation to come out like that. I am normally a calm and friendly person.
